E-library consortium in NTR Health University soon

All affiliated colleges will come under the network; IMA feedback sought on medical education

HYDERABAD: The Vice-Chancellor of NTR Health University, R. Sambasiva Rao, said that a digital library consortium, connecting all affiliated colleges and enabling access to a large number of books and journals would be launched in a few weeks.

Inaugurating the annual academic conference of the State unit of the Indian Medical Association, here on Sunday, he said that the consortium would provide e-learning material to students. Referring to the criticism that MBBS course was "outdated", he asked the IMA to give feedback "so that medical education can be moulded". The CME programmes conducted by IMA could also be made available to the colleges as teaching material.

Staff, seat woes

He said medical education in the State suffered due to lack of teachers and "disproportionate shortage of post-graduation seats". While there were more than 3,000 MBBS seats there were hardly 850 PG seats. Dental and nursing fields faced the same situation. "We have to do something to increase the PG seats," he said, urging the IMA to influence the Government in this regard.

Stating that lack of proper training to teachers was another problem, Prof. Rao said the university had established a teachers' training centre for conducting workshops every quarter. It was also streamlining the admission process to medical courses.

Hope for villages

He hoped IMA's "Aao Gaon Chale" programme would bridge the gap between medical facilities in rural and urban centres.

Following a plea from IMA State secretary, G.Suresh to start a course in family medicine, he said that it had already been launched but there were "no takers". He assured that fresh efforts would be made to make it popular.

Former IMA national president, R. Jayachandra Reddy, said the association had asked its 1,500 branches to adopt a village each under the `Aao Gaon Chale' programme for providing medical services to rural people.

P. Sreelatha, president, IMA City chapter, spoke. National coordinator, IMA, N. Appa Rao, and Prof. Rao were felicitated.
