HYDERABAD: The family of Vasantha Kumari, a professor who was arrested 45 days ago on the charge of organising prostitution in Tirupati, urged the Government to order an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying that she was implicated in a false case. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Ms. Kumari's elder brother P. Sudhakar Reddy and mother, P. Ramanamma, charged that Kumari's estranged husband P. Venkata Ramana Reddy and the Tirupati west police station Sub-Inspector Srinivasulu were responsible for booking the "false" case. They maintained that the alleged involvement of the SI and Ramana Reddy was brought to the notice of the Chittoor police higher-ups but the latter had not taken action so far. "What is the need for a university professor to organise prostitution to earn money?" they questioned. According to them, the SI demanded money from Ms. Kumari saying he would help settle her dispute with her husband.
`Rented' trouble
When the professor refused to give money, the SI fabricated charges against her, they said. Ms. Kumari's brother and mother stated that two men who were arrested -Srikanth and Tulasiram - had taken a portion of Kumari's four-storied house in Tirupati a fortnight before the case was booked. "It is a fact that these two were caught red-handed with two sex workers in the rented portion. But, Ms. Kumari was no way connected to them," they maintained.
