Opposition stages fast
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM:
: Members of the Opposition staged a day-long fast at Kunrathur on Friday to protest against the neglect of basic facilities in the locality.
The members belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Congress, the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Marumalarchi DMK, the Left parties and the Puratchi Bharatham, took part in the fast at Kunrathur bus stop.
T.M. Anbarasan, DMK president of the Kunrathur Special Village Panchayat, said the previous regime had spent several crores of rupees for laying important roads connecting Kunrathur with other areas, but as they were not maintained by the present government, people were put to great hardship.
The Porur - Sriperumbudur Road (about 30 km) at a cost of Rs. 14 crores, the Kumananchavady - Pallavaram Road (14 km) costing Rs. 11 crores and other roads, including those connecting Mugaliwakkam and Mangadu, and Kunrathur and Tiruneermalai were all laid when the DMK was in power. However, due to lack of maintenance, several stretches were now unmotorable.
Despite the heavy flow of traffic on these roads the State Government did not take efforts to maintain them.
