CHENNAI: It was a graduation programme with a difference. Teachers who had participated in the Teacher Empowerment Programme of EZ Vidya, in partnership with Wipro, were given certificates at a function presided over by N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Saturday. The 250 teachers from 11 schools from across the State had participated in the Chennai-based EZ Vidya's two-year programme from 2003 to 2005. The programme is part of Wipro's `Mission Education,' an attempt to change the way learning takes place by partnerships with education experts across the country. Trainers like EZ Vidya then take the latest teaching methods to the schools they work with. Vijay Gupta, vice-president, Community Initiative from Wipro, had an interactive session on education issues with the teachers. Mr. Ram commended Wipro and the Azim Premji Foundation for undertaking to reconcile the pursuit of quality with the objective of being more accessible in the area of teacher education. He said there was need for more similar efforts to spread the impact of the programme. He quoted Romila Thapar's article in The Hindu to reiterate the importance of familiarising the teacher with the significance of critical inquiry. Chitra Ravi, director, EZ Vidya, called the various schools on stage, mentioning the highlights of the company's interaction with each institution. Staff from EZ Vidya staged a tableau that sought to remind the teachers of the lessons they had learnt during the programme.
