Youngsters told to conserve and enhance nature

CHENNAI: The agriculture scientist, M.S. Swaminathan, on Tuesday called upon the younger generation to work not just for conservation of nature but also for enhancement of nature.

Addressing a gathering that comprised a large number of college and school students, Dr. Swaminathan, who released a catalogue of the World Wide Fund for Nature-India, said: "We have inherited nature from our ancestors. Should not we leave it in a better condition?"

Mangroves

Referring to Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. and the Asian tsunami, he said they had only underscored the importance of preserving the environment. Mangroves functioned as a shield when the tsunami struck the coast.

Dr. Swaminathan praised the judiciary and the media for environmental preservation and said they contributed immensely for creating greater awareness on the topic.

He praised the WWF for its sustained work in highlighting the need for harmony between nature and human kind.

Catalogue

He presented the first copy of the catalogue to T.S. Narayanasami, chairman and managing director of the Indian Overseas Bank.

Mangalaraj Johnson, chairman, WWF-India, thanked several institutions such as IOB, State Bank of India, The Hindu , Amalgamations group, Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School and Vivekananda College, for their unstinted support to the WWF and promoting the cause of environmental protection. The representatives of the organisations, Mr. Narayanasami, W. Chanti Babu, Deputy General Manager, SBI, S. Ramachadran, Whole Time Director, SPEED-A-WAY Private Limited of the Amalgamations group, N. Murali, Joint Managing Director of The Hindu , Asha Raghavan, coordinator, Vidya Mandir Nature Club, and S. Swaminathan, head of zoology department of Vivekananda College and adviser of the Viveka Nature Club, were honoured.
