This Day That Age
Mass spinning, prayers and public meetings were held throughout the country to celebrate the 61st birthday of Acharya Vinoba Bhave on September 11. In the capital, the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took part in the celebrations. Tributes were paid to Acharya Bhave for the great mission he has undertaken. The significance of bhoodan and other allied movements was explained by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the Vice-President, Dr. Radhakrishnan, the Union Home Minister, Pandit G.B. Pant and others. In a brief address, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said that if the philosophy of Sarvodaya was fully implemented, there would be an era of love throughout the land. The movements bhoodan, sampattidan and sramdan he said, were part of a great non-violent revolution which would change the face of society. He appealed to the people to fully cooperate with Acharya Vinoba's movement and achieve the great ideal of Sarvodaya. That would not only mean a service to the country but a great service to humanity at large. Later, inaugurating the Delhi State Sarvodaya conference, Dr. Radhakrishnan said the concept of Sarvodaya applied not merely to the Indian society but world society. Sarvodaya aimed at the progress of all people. In the historic village of Pochampalli - where the bhoodan movement was born four years ago - Acharya Vinoba's birthday was celebrated in a grand manner. Thousands of villagers gathered under the banyan tree where the pioneer of the bhoodan movement received the first gift of land in 1951. A festive atmosphere prevailed in the village.
