CHENNAI THE: Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University on Monday started the counselling process for admissions to five-year law degree courses. Law Minister D. Jayakumar inaugurated the counselling session in the morning. He handed over allotment orders to about 10 students, including the three top rankers, R. Devasena of Coimbatore who had a cut-off mark of 67.375, R. Senthilkumar of Tiruchi who scored 60.625 and Meena of Chennai, 59.625. A total of 971 seats, including 160 seats in University Law College at Chengalpattu and 80 in the only private law college at Salem, will be allotted during the week, university sources said. Besides the communal reservation system, the university has allocated three per cent of the total seats to the physically handicapped, 11 per cent to eminent sportspersons and one per cent each to children of freedom fighters and ex-servicemen. Of the five Government Law Colleges in the State, the one at Madurai has been allocated the maximum of 171 seats. Three colleges at Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli have 160 seats each, while the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College in Chennai has 80 seats. Counselling for the 1,101 seats in the three-year law degree stream will start on September 19.
Students' protest
In the morning, members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged demonstration demanding restoration of 562 seats in the Government Law College here in accordance with the Supreme Court and High Court orders. The demonstrators, led by SFI state secretary G. Selva, tried to besiege the Law Minister, but were arrested. They were released in the evening. When the demonstrators, led by SFI state secretary G.
