BANGALORE: One would need a magnifier to look at his creations. But C. Mallikarjuna Reddy, who calls himself a miniature artist, carves his delicate works seeing only with his naked eye.

And his painstaking efforts have paid off. Mr. Reddy has set a new Guinness world record for "Most chain links carved from a single toothpick."

On February 21, in the presence of members of the public at Kannada Bhavan, Mr. Reddy carved 28 chain links on a single wooden toothpick. The task was not an easy one as it took him six hours to complete the feat. "You need a lot of patience for such a feat," said Mr. Reddy while announcing his achievement to presspersons on Monday.

By accomplishing this feat, he has broken the earlier Guinness record of carving 17 chain links on a single toothpick, which was achieved by an American from Pennsylvania in 1993, and became a proud Guinness world record holder.

A student of biotechnology in the city, Mr. Reddy said since his childhood he used to carve miniature sculptures and chain links on pieces of chalk.

"Looking at my works, my friends told me that I could try to create a world record. I applied to the Guinness Book of World Records authorities for creating most number of chain links on a piece of chalk but they rejected it saying that they did not have that category. But they suggested I could try and break the record of most chain links on a single toothpick. It was not very difficult for me to do that," said Mr. Reddy.
