dated September 14, 1955: Accident at Hirakud

Twelve workers, including seven women, and a labour supervisor were killed when a 70-foot high scaffolding staircase at the Hirakud dam site collapsed on September 12. Seventy-one of the 100 others injured were lying at the Birla Hospital in Sambalpur. The bamboo-and-wood staircase was used by the workers for carrying boulders, concrete and other construction material to the top of the dam, now under construction.
