dated September 14, 1955: Earthquake in Cairo

A violent earthquake - the worst remembered by the Egyptians in 30 years - shook Cairo on September 12 causing widespread damage. Twelve schools collapsed, killing 19 children and injuring 68 others. The tremors were felt in several parts of Eastern Mediterranean and reports of damage to property have been received from Alexandria, Jerusalem and Cyprus. Tall buildings trembled and more than 45 houses were wrecked in Cairo when the tremor struck at 8-15 a.m. and lasted one minute. Ambulances and commandeered taxis rushed the injured children to hospitals, while fire brigades began to clear the fallen debris.
