Concern over threat to BJP MLA

Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR: The Opposition Congress on Tuesday took up in the Gujarat Assembly the case of a ruling BJP MLA, who allegedly threatened to "self-immolate" herself if the Narendra Modi Government did not stop "victimising" her. Immediately after question hour, Congress member Chandrika Chudasma sought Speaker Mangaldas Patel's permission to raise the issue of BJP MLA Ramila Desai's alleged threat. Ms. Desai had also reportedly told Mr. Modi about the "threatening calls" she was receiving for supporting the dissidents.

As the Speaker disallowed permission to Ms. Chudasma to raise the issue, the entire Opposition raised slogans forcing the Chair to adjourn the House for 30 minutes. Later, Leader of the Opposition Arjun Modhvadia said the incident showed the "deteriorating" law and order situation in the State. If a ruling party MLA received "threatening calls" and felt unsafe, what would be the condition of the general public and women in particular, he asked. Though the ruling party members did not join the Congress on the issue, some dissidents posed embarrassing questions to the Government.
