Preeti Jain undergoes lie detector test

Staff Reporter

`Brain mapping' tests also conducted

BANGALORE: Preeti Jain, the Bollywood actress, was brought by the Mumbai police here on Tuesday for taking a lie detector test at the Forensic Sciences Lab. She was also made to go through `brain mapping' tests to find if she had given a supari (contract) against Madhur Bandarkar, a film director. Naresh Pardesi, a co-accused, was brought along with her.

The lab here was chosen because it could also conduct a narco analysis test, in case the Mumbai court permitted it, one of the Mumbai police personnel accompanying the two arrested persons said. The charge against Preeti is that she paid Rs. 70,000 to Pardesi, a member of Mumbai's Arun Gawli gang, for the alleged `supari'. The actress had accused the film director of sexual harassment.

A three-member team of Mumbai police, including two women officers, brought them in the morning by a scheduled flight. After interrogation, Preeti was first taken for the lie detector test. The questions related to her statement made to the Mumbai police, according to B.M. Mohan, Director of the Forensic Lab.

To find out the facts about the `murder conspiracy', she was put through the `brain mapping' test. This involves studying whether the brain waves indicate if a person being questioned is telling the truth. An electroencephalogram (EEG) with multiple channels is wired to the person's head and the neuro signals generated are studied for variations. The eye movements are also recorded.

Dr. Mohan said lie detector (polygraph) tests were almost 100 per cent reliable while narco analysis tests were 98 per cent reliable. The tests were carried out by Malini, Assistant Ditrector of the Forensic Sciences Lab.

"There was no request for a narco analysis test, which needs a court order,'' Dr. Mohan said.
