CBI files final report against Telgi

BANGALORE: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday filed a final report in the case against Abdul Kareem Telgi in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket. The report related to seizure of fake stamp papers by the Upparpet police five years ago.

24 persons charged

In the final report, 24 persons, including Telgi and Rehan Baig, brother of former Minister Roshan Baig, stand charged with offences under the Indian Penal Code, the Karnataka Stamp Act and provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

Nine of accused, who were earlier charged by the STAMPIT, the special investigation team, have not been charged now.

The CBI has requested the special court that the nine accused may now be discharged. The court has reserved orders pending acceptance of Tuesday's final report.

539 witnesses

The final report cites 729 documents in support of charges against Telgi and others accused in the case. The report lists 539 witnesses, their statements and runs into ten volumes.

Transfer sought

The CBI has requested its Director to approach the Supreme Court for permission to transfer a case against Telgi registered by the Hubli police to a Pune court. The transfer has been sought because the fake currency notes seized by the Hubli police from an accomplice of Telgi were connected to the stamp paper case, according to the CBI.

The stamp paper case is now before the court in Pune, according to the CBI Senior Special Prosecutor B.R. Nanjundiah.
