CUDDALORE: A team of Panchayat Union Chairmen from Kanyakumari district visited Cuddalore recently to get acquainted with the relief and rehabilitation measures being taken in the tsunami-affected coastal villages. Led by P.C.N.Vijayakumar, the team evinced keen interest on the protective wall raised with palmyra tree trunks at Thazhanguda. The local body chiefs interacted with the people there and ascertained their views on the utility of such a protective wall. They were highly impressed by the concept of raising a protective wall with tree trunks because, in their opinion, such a measure would be doubly beneficial. The existence of the wall would instil confidence among the villagers and allay their fears about seawater incursion. It would also save the coconut groves and other vegetations existing on the seashore. The team later commended District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi for the timely measures taken to rehabilitate the tsunami-affected people and to resume their livelihood pursuits. Those who constituted the team included Vijayaraj from Munsirai, Padmanabhan from Thakkali, Mery Kamalabai from Killiyur and Latha Ramachandran from Thovalai.
