BANGALORE: The city will host the first Kannada Science Conference from Thursday to Saturday. It is being organised by National Aerospace Laboratories and Swadeshi Vijnana Andolana, Karnataka. Office-bearers of the organising committee A.R. Upadhya, A.K. Satyavati, T.A. Balakrishna Adiga and M.S. Ramachandra, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the conference is the result of years of work of making scientific knowledge available in Kannada to laymen and students with the help of scientists. The andolana is affiliated to Vijnana Bharati, which has been conducting scientific conferences in different Indian languages. The conference will begin on the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It will cover various branches of science with a focus on alternative fuels and aerospace sciences. Papers related to physical, chemical, social, cultural and psycho-sciences will be presented in Kannada. Mr. Ramachandra, scientist at HAL, said that a number of experiments are being conducted by voluntary agencies on science communication in Kannada at different levels. The conference is expected to provide a forum for these agencies to exchange their views and share experiences and possibly arrive at an integrated approach. A common glossary of scientific terms in Kannada will be among the issues to be discussed. Apart from scientists, Kannada authors of science books will also be involved, he added. Dr. Visvesvaraya Vijnana Puraskara will be presented on the occasion. This year's award winners are scientists C.N.R. Rao, U.R. Rao, R. Narasimha, V.K. Aatre, and S.K. Ramachandra Rao, and Infosys Chairman and Chief Mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy. For young scientists there will be an opportunity to present research papers in Kannada and those selected will be honoured. Mr. Upadhya said after a review of the abstracts, 100 papers were selected for presentation at the conference. They will be presented at two-theme based sessions. Eminent scientists will deliver six plenary lectures. Minister for Science and Technology Basavaraj S. Horatti will inaugurate the conference and Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa will preside over the function. He will also release a souvenir.
