Anju moves up to No. 4 position

NEW DELHI: Long jumper Anju Bobby George has moved up to be world No. 4 from her seventh position following her silver medal at the World athletics final at Monte Carlo on August 9. Anju had earlier held the fourth rank, her highest, during May-June 2004.

In the latest rankings released by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on Tuesday, Anju (1234 points) was beaten to the third place that she and husband Bobby George were expecting, by Russian Oksana Udmurtova by two points.

Anju pushed world champion Tiana Madison down by a place to the fifth, also by two points. Madison did not compete in Monaco.

Anju earned 1308 points for her 6.75 and the silver in the Monte Carlo final. Udmurtova, who finished sixth, also added a valuable 1201 points that helped her discard a lower 1165 earned in a smaller meet earlier. She moved up from sixth to third. Russian Tatyana Kotova cemented her place further at the top spot with 1325 points after her Monaco success that fetched her 1354 points.

The average points for the best six performances of an athlete over a one-year period are taken for ranking purposes. Scores are awarded for results according to the IAAF scoring tables while placing scores are dependent on the nature of the meet.

The top 10: 1. Tatyana Kotova (Rus) 1325 pts, 2. Grace Upshaw (US) 1241, 3. Oksana Udmurtova (Rus) 1236, 4. Anju Bobby George (Ind) 1234, 5. Tiana Madison (US) 1232, 6. Yargelis Savigne (Cub) 1206, 7. Eunice Barber (Fra) 1202, 8. Carolina Kluft (Swe) 1201, 9. Irina Simagina (Rus) 1200, 10. Elva Goulbourne (Jam) 1182.
