BELLARY: Principal Civil Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Bellary, has sentenced three persons to two years simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 15,000 in connection with a dowry harassment case. Nirmala, wife of Manjunath, lodged a complaint with the police in December, 1999, that she was being harassed by her husband, V.N. Ramaraju and Anantamma, all residents of Gandhi Nagar, for dowry. She alleged that they had threatened to set her on fire if she failed to get more dowry, despite the fact that Rs. 75,000 cash and gold ornaments had been given at the time of marriage. The police filed a charge-sheet against the three. After examining the witnesses, the judge passed the orders convicting Manjunath, Ramaraju, and Anantamma and sentencing them to one year simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000 each for harassing Nirmala. As per the provisions of the Dowry Act, he sentenced all the three to undergo two years of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 15,000 each.
