TIRUPATI: The Oriental Insurance Company celebrated its Foundation Day at its office premises on Monday. Appointed Election Observer

Nellore: P. Venkateswarlu, a senior IAS officer and Special Collector, Telugu Ganga Project (land acquisition), Nellore, has been appointed an Election Observer for the forthcoming polls in Bihar. He has been asked to attend a meeting at New Delhi on September 20 in connection with a briefing by the Election Commission. Staff Reporter

Competition for scholarships

Nellore: The Nellore branch of IndusInd Bank is conducting a competition in respect of a scholarship programme for children. The competition is open for all students from classes I to X and an examination would be conducted on October 15. Students have been asked to register by September 19. Staff Reporter

17 offenders held

Nellore: Around 17 persons were arrested in the district in connection with various offences. At Sullurpet, the police have nabbed five persons for allegedly attempting to kidnap a girl, whereas at Anantamadugu village of Sydapuram mandal, four persons were arrested in connection with an assault. The police at T.P. Gudur have nabbed a person in connection with a cheque bouncing case and at Naidupet, two persons were nabbed for allegedly possessing 5 kg of ganja. At Naidupet again, the police arrested a home guard in an alleged dowry harassment case, whereas at Nellore, an organiser of single number lottery was nabbed by police. Staff Reporter

Rally against proposal to remove veil

KURNOOL: Hundreds of people of a minority community, led by Awaz Committee, took out a rally at Nandyal on Tuesday to protest against the proposal made by a few Congress leaders that the women wearing veil (Burkha) should remove it to ascertain their identity at the time of voting. The TDP leaders were understood to have extended moral support to the protest. Staff Reporter

PCC chief's visit

Nellore: The Pradesh Congress president K. Keshava Rao will visit Nellore on the evening of September 17. According to available information, he will arrive here from Kavali at around 5 p.m. and after having discussions with party functionaries, will proceed to Gudur and Venkatagiri. His visit is in connection with the forthcoming civic polls. Staff Reporter

Nine injured in accidents

Nellore: Around nine persons were injured in three different incidents in Nellore district on Tuesday. At Yarrapalem village of Kondapuram mandal, six persons were injured following clashes between two rival groups, over a land dispute.

The condition of two of the injured is said to be serious. At Krishnapuram village of D.V. Satram mandal, two persons sustained injuries when a lorry overturned and at Jagadevipet village of Indukurupet mandal, one person was injured, when he was allegedly manhandled by his relatives over a property dispute. Assembly session

HYDERABAD: The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly will begin on September 28. The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, on Tuesday issued a notification summoning the fourth session of the 12th Assembly which is likely to extend over 10 working days. - Staff Reporter

Exchange of fire

Rajahmundry: No one was injured in an exchange of fire between police and CPI (ML-New Democracy) naxalites near Kadumuru in Maredumilli mandal on Tuesday. According to OSD, Rampachodavaram, R. Satyanarayana, the police recovered 10 rounds of .303 live bullets, five kitbags, two tents and revolutionary literature. - Staff Reporter

3 Maoists held

KADAPA: The Kadapa police arrested CPI (Maoist) Kadapa-Chittoor district committee member, Arithoti Kondaiah (34) and two militants Raveri Srinivasulu (28) alias Gaddam Sriinivasulu and Animela Suresh alias Suresh, at Polathala hillocks in Pendlimarry station limits on Tuesday. Tiffin box bombs and other explosives were seized. - Staff Reporter

Two buried alive

Srikakulam: A woman and her daughter were buried alive on Tuesday when the mud walls of their house collapsed following incessant rain over the last two days. In Garikapadu village of Santhakaviti mandal four houses collapsed in the last couple of days. A breach in the village tank led to flooding of paddy crop in several acres. - Special Correspondent

Militant surrenders

NALGONDA: Baddela Mutyalu alias Ashok (22), a member of the military platoon of Nalgonda district, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, M.M. Bhagwat, here on Tuesday. Hailing from Kasarajupally in Deverakonda division, Mutyalu went underground during the peace talks. - Staff Reporter

More women voters

VIZIANAGARAM: Woman voters will decide the fate of candidates in the four municipalities in the district as they outnumber men. Keeping this in view all political parties have fielded women candidates. There are 174 women in the fray in the four municipalities. - Correspondent

Passengers robbed

Nellore: Unidentified persons who forced an RTC bus to halt at Vadlapudi village of Manubolu mandal, on Monday night, escaped after relieving the passengers of their ornaments and cash, all worth nearly Rs. 1 lakh. They allegedly manhandled a woman passenger, when she refused to part with her ornaments. - Staff Reporter

Tributes paid

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, paid rich tributes to the former Chief Minister, Burgula Ramakrishna Rao on the eve his 38th death anniversary. Dr. Reddy recalled the services of Burgula to the downtrodden. - Special Correspondent

Padayatra planned

HYDERABAD: The Swadeshi Jagaran Manch leader, Govindacharya, will undertake a padayatra in Karimnagar and Warangal districts from September 29 to October 8 as part of the SJM's awareness campaign against the World Trade Organisation. - Special Correspondent

KCR to campaign

HYDERABAD: The TRS president, K. Chandrasekhara Rao, will campaign for party candidates in municipal elections for three days from Wednesday. Mr. Rao will leave for Warangal on Wednesday morning and participate in a road show. He will leave for Siddipet and return to Hyderabad. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: J. Raymond Peter has been appointed Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation relieving T.V.N. Rao, from the additional charge. S. Narsing Rao, who is waiting for posting has been made the Secretary, Information Technology and Communication department relieving K.
