HYDERABAD: Rashid Byramji was felicitated by the Hyderabad Race Club on Monday for completing five decades of producing champions, including 200 Classic and a dozen Indian Turf Invitation Cup winners. What sets him apart are the uncanny knack and expert eye to select two-year-olds with outstanding conformation straight from the stud farms and moulding them into thoroughbreds for his owners. Regardless of whether his wards are costly or moderate purchases, his hallmark has been an ability to get the best out of them. Over the years, it has become a matter of prestige to leave horses in his accomplished charge. For half a century, the intrepid trainer has set standards others can maybe emulate but never match. The modest Mumbai-native, now based in Bangalore, was unassuming about his achievement, attributing his amazing success to the good fortune of enjoying the backing of his owners. To mark the occasion, HRC Chairman, R. Surender Reddy presented Byramji with a plaque and a citation that recorded the latter's unrivalled achievements in Indian racing history. The affable trainer's antecedents are impressive, his being the second generation in the craft. His racing acumen, acknowledged by one and all, has been inherited the most by his son Darius. Rashid Byramji's presence as the nation's leading mentor has enriched Indian racing and will continue to do so in the years to come.
