Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The power situation in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday showed marked improvement following restoration of 500 MW unit at Anpara power station coupled with lower power demand in the State due to weather conditions. The combined power generation, which was pegged at 1600-1700 MW since last many days, spurted to more than 2000 MW and was likely to increase further after the 500 MW unit started working in full steam. ``If we achieve 2300 MW of generation, the State will be in a position to give power to other States, though the scheduled power cut will continue,'' General Manager (Systems), UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) Ashok Kumar said. He said after import from Central sector, the State had power to the tune of 4800 MW, which in view of the decreased demand, was sufficient to meet the scheduled power supply in the State. ``May be we will be in a position to give power to other States as well,'' he said. It may be recalled that the State went through a major power crisis in the last ten days, as two units in Anpara, with capacity of 500 MW and 210 MW, stopped generation last week and the peak hour power demand was touching 7000 MW. The condition of Northern Grid was also unstable after 800 MW Dadri unit of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and 210 MW Singrauli thermal unit tripped. After restoration of these two Central sector units, the frequency of the Grid had also become favourable, Mr Kumar said. There had been all round resentment over erratic power supply and the residents had taken to streets across the Sstate. Though the power cut was already there, the unscheduled rostering and breakdown hit them hard. The power crisis was so grave that even the big towns were not getting power for up to ten hours every day.
