CHANDIGARH: Non-vegetarians in Haryana can now taste a new delicacy in the form of quail meat. NABARD has sanctioned a scheme for breeding and rearing of Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix var. japonica ) in Mehmudpur village of Sonepat district. According to a NABARD spokesman, Japanese Quail is a migratory game bird which has been reared in different countries for meat. In India, quail farming was introduced as an alternative to broiler farming and to provide new variety of meat. The bird has been bred to suit the climatic conditions of India and today quail farming has reached the nook and corner of the country. Since the bird was imported as "domesticated'', it has been classified as poultry and also exempted from the purview of the Forest Species Conservation Act, 1972. The scheme has been sanctioned to the Haryana State Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (HSCARDB) though its Mudlana branch in Sonepat district.
