NEW DELHI: The 45th edition of the Subroto Cup football tournament that has attracted 66 teams in junior and sub-junior sections from across the country kicks-off at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Wednesday. The tournament runs for almost a month with the final slated on October 13. The 2005 Subroto Cup, an all-India school football championship, opens with a match between the defending junior (under-17) champion, D. N. High School, Kendujhar, Orissa, and Army Boys team BRC, Danapur, in the Group I league. There are 38 teams divided into eight groups with top two from each pool making it to the quarterfinals. In the sub-junior section (under-14), 28 teams have confirmed their participation, including two schools from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The winner in the junior section will get Rs. 50,000 in prize money while the runner-up settle for Rs. 30,000. In the sub-junior category, the prize money will be Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000 for the winner and the runner-up respectively. More than the cash prize, the Subroto Society, run by the Indian Air Force, plans to provide employment avenues for the outstanding players in the defence services. Also, a selection committee comprising representatives from the Sports Authority of India, Subroto Society, the Tata Football Academy, and the All India Football Federation (AIFF), will select 30 outstanding players from juniors and 16 from sub-juniors for a possible government scholarship at NIS, Patiala.
