BJP opposes amendment to MLAs Pension Bill

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: Describing the recent amendment to the MLAs Pension Bill, which would allow the pension of some senior MLAs to exceed their salaries at the time of their retirement, as absurd, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has resolved to approach the Governor S.C. Jamir seeking not to give his assent to the Bill. The Leader of the Opposition, Manohar Parrikar, has demanded that the Bill be allowed to lapse, as the amendment had been passed in the recent budget session of the Assembly while the Opposition was absent. He said it would allow some of the ruling MLAs and the Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane to draw more pension than their salary.

Mr. Parrikar described the amended Bill as "irregular, illegal and immoral and against the basic logic of payment of pension." The Bill passed with a last minute amendment from a ruling Congress MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu envisages for MLAs, apart from Rs. 5,000 as basic pension, Rs. 1000 additional pension for every year of their membership of the House.

This would mean some of the senior Congress Ministers and MLAs some of whom are MLAs since around 1977 (in and out for some time), will draw more pension than the salary at the end of their tenure. Mr. Parrikar said the BJP would point out to the Governor that this was against the logic of pension and hoped that the Governor would see reason and stop this absurdity.
