High Court notice to schools

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday served notices on more than a hundred unaided private schools here that have defaulted on providing free education to poor students they are obliged to under the agreement for allotment of land to them by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Land & Development Officer (L&DO).

A Division Bench comprising Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Madan B. Lokur directed these schools to show cause why they should not be asked close down for not fulfilling the obligation by September 28.

Under the agreement, these schools had agreed to provide free education to 20 to 25 per cent of poor students of their respective intake strength but they have failed to fulfil their mandatory obligation over the years.

Among the defaulters are schools that have not admitted even a single student under the scheme.

The Court has been hearing a public interest litigation by Social Jurist of Ashok Aggarwal, a Delhi High Court lawyer.

If the authorities concerned made these schools implement the land allotment condition, at least 1.5 lakh students would benefit, the lawyer said.

The matter will now come up for hearing on September 28.
