Boat race winners

ALAPPUZHA: The Payippad snake boat lead by Sooraj Alex has won the 36th Mannar Mahatma Boat Race held at the river Pamba, at Mannar on Tuesday, said Mannar Abdul Latheef, the patron of the race and KPCC joint secretary. The second prize was bagged by the Alappad snake boat while the Aayaparambu Pandi boat finished third. P.J. Kurien, MP, inaugurated the competitions. C.S. Sujata, MP, inaugurated the meeting held in connection with the race. Mr. Latheef and convener of the race N. Shailaj offered felicitations. Elizabeth Mammen Mathai, MLA, gave away the prizes to the winners. — Staff Reporter

Thrissur: Sasi, 21, wanted in several cases, was arrested at Kokkala here on Tuesday after he assaulted Sajeesh of Polakkodu House, an artisan, according to the police. — Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kollam Electrical Circle of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has set up a round-the-clock special helpline for consumers during the Onam festival period. Governor's Onam greetings

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R. L. Bhatia has greeted the people on the eve of Onam. Holiday on polling days

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The polling days for the civic elections have been declared as public holidays in the respective districts. Accordingly, September 24 will be a public holiday for the eight districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Thrissur and September 26 for the remaining districts. The employees who come under the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act are to be either given a paid holiday on polling day or be allowed time to cast their votes. The Labour Commissioner has been asked to take steps for ensuring it. The District Collectors have been asked to give a holiday on September 27 to institutions selected as counting centres.— Special Correspondent

Allotment to five-year LLB course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has released the revised list of candidates reallotted seats to the five-year LLB course at Government Law Colleges at Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode. The reallotment has been based on the options exercised by candidates after undergoing the Centralised Allotment Process. The earlier reallotment conducted on September 5 had been cancelled by the CEE. Selection memos will be sent to those figuring in the list. They have been directed to report to the college allotted with all the relevant documents on September 26. Court orders CBI inquiry

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has ordered a CBI probe into the death of a woman and two children haling from Adoor at Udupi under mysterious circumstances. The CBI probe was ordered while allowing a writ petition filed by Annama Thomas, of Adoor, mother of the deceased, Prinu.

According to her, Prinu and her children were staying along with Prinu's husband at Udupi. Annamma received a message from the wife of the elder brother of Prinu's husband saying that Prinu and her children had accidentally fallen into the well near their house and were drowned. She suspected that the death was a case of murder. Though a case was registered by the Karnataka Police, she feared that a fair investigation will not be conducted. — Staff Reporter
