CHENNAI: Special classes and coaching for students of class X and XII are not enough if students must pass the board examinations, said M.P. Vijayakumar, Commissioner of Chennai Corporation. "Every child comes to school with a good working knowledge of its native language. We need to teach children in a better and interesting way from class I if they should perform well in board examinations," he said on Monday. The Government had come up with new systems for primary schoolchildren to make the subjects more interesting. Middle school teachers were being trained to impart knowledge in an interesting way. It is a matter of pride for Chennai Corporation schoolteachers that the methods followed by Corporation schools were being implemented in 4,000 schools across the State, he said at a meeting organised as part of Teacher's Day celebrations. On the occasion prize were distributed to school toppers and teachers. P.K. Sekar Babu, MLA from the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency said 86 classrooms had been built in the constituency. Noting that the school on Ponnusamy Street where the programme was held had been upgraded to a higher secondary school, he said four new schools would be coming up shortly. He appealed to the Corporation to build a kitchen and dining room for children of the school. Deputy Mayor R. Thiagarajan said teachers laid the foundation for a student, helping them to choose their vocation and teaching them to make firm decisions when they took jobs. Shiv Das Meena, Joint Commissioner (Education), S. Narayanan, chairman of Standing Committee for Education, V. Sukumar Babu, leader of the ruling party in the council, and S. Parimala, councillor of Ward 4, also took part. Mr. Vijayakumar gave away prizes to 140 teachers of various subjects in which students scored full marks. Four teachers received the best teacher awards and 126 school toppers in class X and class XII were given prizes and certificates. A total of 278 teachers were honoured on the occasion of Teacher's Day.
