CHENNAI: The Ramakrishna Mutt Road, especially the stretch between Mylapore tank and Greenways Road, which was dug up many times in the last two years for laying pipelines, today lies in a shambles. Though Metrowater officials say the work has been completed, the road is yet to be re-laid. Civic officials are waiting for the rains to cease to start the work. At present, the road is a driver's nightmare. Corporation officials say it may take at least a month before the users have a road to drive on. A three-layer road needs to be laid. First the road needs to levelled and set before it can be blacktopped. Traffic on the stretch has been made one-way. Vehicles coming from Adyar and Tiruvanmiyur are diverted through Tiruvenkadam Street to reach the Devanathan Road junction. This has given rise to another set of problems for residents of Tiruvenkadam Street, which is in a bad condition. They say traffic is quite heavy on the residential locality, which has many schools. A resident points to the presence of a primary school on the street corner and warns that heavy vehicles can pose a risk to the schoolchildren. Water supply has been disrupted to houses on R.K. Mutt Road and Tiruvenkadam Street due to the digging activity. Last weekend, the situation took a turn for the worse when the road became soggy due to rain.
