Rape aboard train suspected

RANCHI: A girl travelling alone in a first class coach of the Delhi-Howrah Toofan Express was found in a semi-conscious state at Madhupur in Jharkhand's Deogar district on Tuesday, amid suspicion that she was raped, a senior railway police official said. Sidho Hembram, Superintendent of Police (Railway), Dhanbad Division, said the police suspected that the girl, said to be from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, was sexually assaulted on the train. The travelling ticket examiner and the coach attendant were detained, he said. The police were looking for two other suspects.

``She claims she has been raped but she is still in a semi-conscious state. Only after she recovers can we get a clear picture," Mr. Hembram said. The first information report was not yet filed as the girl was not clear in her statement. The girl was admitted to hospital here, Mr. Hembram said. He said prima facie it appeared that the girl had fled her home.
