Bar girl linked to cricket bookies: police

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police on Tuesday claimed they had established the links of Mumbai bargirl Tarannum Khan with cricket bookies. They have taken her passport and said they were still examining her role in the syndicate of cricket bookies and the underworld.

``As of now, we can book her under the Gambling Act but we do not want to reach a conclusion in a hurry. We would explore if Tarannum could be booked under a more stringent law,'' a senior Crime Branch official told PTI here.

Tarannum Khan hit the headlines after an Income Tax raid at her plush suburban Andheri bungalow earlier this month revealed huge cash and property investment details.

Names of cricketers

She was questioned on Tuesday by the police in connection with the names of bookies and some Sri Lankan cricketers found in her mobile phonebook.

Police officials denied that a team of the International Cricket Council, now visiting India, had met them.

``Nobody from the ICC has met us, nor do we have any information about their [team's] visit,'' DCP Dhananjay Kamalakar of the Mumbai Crime Branch told reporters here.

A two-member anti-corruption unit of the ICC is reported to have visited Delhi on Monday.

According to media reports, the ICC team had also come here to probe the alleged links of cricketers with bookies.

A New Delhi report said the two officials had come to probe allegations of match-fixing during the recent tri-series in Zimbabwe. The Cricket Board said knew nothing about the reported visit while the CBI also denied having met anybody in this connection.
