MADURAI: : As many as 6000 activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) including 2500 women cadres were taken into custody for staging road roko at 13 different centres in Madurai district on Tuesday. Among the arrested were Member of Parliament P. Mohan and Member of Legislative Assembly N. Nanmaran in the Temple City. About 2000 members including 500 women activists were taken into custody when they staged the agitation in front of the Head Post Office, the Mahal Registrar Office and the Tallakulam Telegraph Office, demanding land, food and employment for the people, and allocation of Rs.50 crores for improving the Government Rajaji Hospital here. They also wanted the Government to immediately revoke the ban on employment and fill vacant posts in various government departments. Mr. Mohan presided over the agitation staged in front of the Head Post Office here. Mr. Nanmaran presided over the agitation staged in front of the Mahal Registrar Office and the urban district secretary, R. Jothyram, presided over the agitation at Tallakulam. Similar picketing was staged at 10 other centres across the district by the members belonging to the rural district unit of the party in response to the State-wide agitation and 4000 of them including 2000 women were held. All the arrested were released in the evening.
