NEW DELHI: With five new dengue patients being admitted to various city hospitals on Tuesday, the total number of cases has risen to 97. Though so far only four deaths have been reported, with three of those belonging to neighbouring States, there is no sign of any let up in the rise in cases despite announcement of various measures by the Delhi Government and the civic bodies. Of the 97 cases, 68 are from the city while 29 patients have been brought in from the neighbouring States including Haryana (12) and Uttar Pradesh (8). In the Capital, West zone in the most affected with 21 cases reported so far followed by Najafgarh (11), Central (9) and Rohini and Karol Bagh (6 each), while three cases are from the VVIP New Delhi Municipal Council area. Moreover, 120 cases of malaria have also been reported in Delhi, of which 42 are from the Capital, while 51 have come from Uttar Pradesh, 15 from Haryana and 12 from other States. All these developments have forced the State Government and the civic bodies to launch special drives. To take stock of the situation, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri on Tuesday held a meeting of senior officers of Health Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Jal Board, NDMC and Directorate of National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme where it was decided to launch a special surveillance drive to check the breeding of aedes mosquito, the vector of the deadly dengue disease.
