Issuance of ration cards

ERODE: For renewal of ration cards thousands of applications were received and new ration cards issued through the respective ration shops in the district. However some persons had not received them.

The District Collector, D. Karthikeyan said that the list of persons those who did not receive their cards were displayed in the respective ration shops in the district. He urged such ration cardholders to approach the respective area Taluk Supply officer and collect the new cards on or before September 30. - Staff Reporter

57-bed ward coming up

ERODE: At a cost of Rs 45 lakhs, a separate 57-bed ward would be constructed within the next four months on 6,300 sq feet of land inside the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Minister, P.C. Ramasamy on Wednesday. To mark the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and also the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's 57th birthday, the 57-bed ward would be built.

He said the Thirunageswaram Naganathaswamy temple Kumbabishagam would be conducted on September 15 and already at a cost of Rs 3.50 crores the temple had been renovated.

MSU offers concession in fees for policemen

TIRUNELVELI: The Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University has announced 10 per cent fee concession for police personnel for courses offered by it.

According to the director, DD and CE, G. Rajaram, if a minimum of 20 policemen wish to join any of the courses being offered by the DD and CE of MSU and come forward to provide a classroom in their premises free of cost for conducting classes, fee concession would be given from this academic year.

When 20 or more policemen come together to join a DD and CE course, the university staff would go to their place with admission forms to complete the preliminary formalities for admission after verifying original certificates of the aspirants. Moreover, the faculty members would go to the premises of the policemen to conduct classes, Mr. Rajaram said.

Theft at school

Tuticorin: Some unidentified persons broke open Union Primary School at Tiruchendur and decamped with 73 kg of rice rice kept inside it on the wee hours of Wednesday. Based on a complaint lodged by Ananthajothi (57), Headmistress, Tiruchendur police are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Preliminary exams held for firemen post

DINDIGUL: A team of district fire officers conducted preliminary examinations, including physical test, for candidates who had applied for fireman posts on compassionate grounds at the district fire office here on Wednesday. Candidates from Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Ramnad, Sivaganga, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai districts took part. After verification, their records would be forwarded for further action. — Staff Reporter

Rs.6.77 cr. sanctioned for road works

PERAMBALUR: The Highways Department has submitted proposals seeking an outlay of Rs. 47 crores for laying roads in various parts of the district, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has said. Presiding over the Road Safety and Traffic Advisory Committee meeting held here on Wednesday, he said a sum of Rs. 6.77 crores has been sanctioned for laying roads in the three municipalities of Perambalur, Jayamkondam and Ariyalur.He said Rs.75 lakhs would be spent for constructing a retaining wall around the Thuraimangalam tank. — Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The revaluation results of Anna University B.E/B.Tech I to VII semester (R-2001-Phase-I) examinations held in May/June this year have been published and are being sent to the respective colleges.

Kingfisher Airlines services from Chennai

CHENNAI: The Kingfisher Airlines began its twice daily non-stop service from Chennai to Bangalore and Hyderabad on Wednesday.

According to a release, the one way fare on the Bangalore-Chennai route is Rs. 1,299 plus taxes and the fare for the Bangalore-Hyderabad route begins at Rs. 1,899 plus taxes. Vijay Mallya, Chairman and Managing Director, said with the launch of these new routes, the daily flights offered by Kingfisher airlines goes up to 34. — Special Correspondent

MLA remanded

SIVAGANGA: Vandavasi MLA Murugavelrajan was sent to 15 days remand in a case registered during 1995.

The Sivaganga police, who arrested Mr. Murugavelrajan at Vilangudi in Madurai district, produced him before the Judicial Magistrate Devadass.

Sources said the case was booked against the MLA for delivering a speech supporting the Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Elam. — Staff Reporter

TTDC package tours to Alangudi

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) will operate special package tours to Alangudi in view of Gurupeyarchi on September 19. According to a TTDC release, the tour will start at 10-30 p.m. on September 18 from the Tourism Complex, Wallajah Road, and return to Chennai on September 20 after special darshan of "Guru". Course in economics

for lecturers

CHENNAI: The UGC Academic Staff College, University of Madras, is conducting a 21-day refresher course in economics for university and college lecturers from September 15. The course aims at focussing the increased importance of "public economics and globalisation." College lecturers working in varsities and affiliated colleges, including self-financing colleges in the country are invited to participate.

Medals for police

CHENNAI: Ninetyeight police personnel, 10 fire and rescue service personnel, nine Prison department officials and five Home Guards personnel have been selected for this year's Chief Minister's Anna Medal on the occasion of C.N. Annadurai's birth anniversary. The award is given to motivate the personnel. Besides, eight personnel each from the police and fire service departments will be presented the Chief Minister's gallantry award.

Awards will also be presented to an Additional Superintendent of Police and a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the fingerprint bureau. The awards will be presented by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at a function to be held later. — Special Correspondent
