Five-time Srivilliputtur MLA Tamaraikani dead

SRIVILLIPUTTUR: : R. Tamaraikani, Srivilliputtur municipal chairman and a five-time MLA from the town, died on Wednesday morning in a private hospital in Madurai. He was 59.

Tamaraikani is survived by his wife, R. Devaki, four sons and a daughter. The body was shifted to his residence here.

Born on October 19, 1946 to S. Ramasamy and R. Shanmugathai, Tamaraikani had been a staunch fan of M.G. Ramachandran since his school days. He led the M.G.R. fans' club and became an MLA as All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate from Srivilliputtur.

After the demise of MGR, he joined the Janaki faction of the AIADMK and unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from the constituency in 1989. In 1991, he won as an independent MLA. Later he joined the AIADMK led by Jayalalithaa. He was the party leader in the Assembly for a brief period. He was also chairman of the Srivilliputtur municipality between 1996 and 2000.

Later, he quit the AIADMK and joined the DMK in 2000. In the next Assembly election, he was pitted against his eldest son, Inbathtamilan, AIADMK candidate, who won and became the Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare.

In Chennai, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi condoled with the death.

In a statement here, he said Tamaraikani was a popular personality in his hometown.
