Red sanders worth Rs. 4 lakhs seized

Nellore: Officials of the Forest Department have seized red sanders worth some Rs. 4 lakhs at Madavayapalem village of Dakkili mandal.

Acting on a tip-off, they intercepted a lorry that was carrying some 50 logs of red sanders. Further searches revealed another 50 logs concealed under bushes in nearby areas. The key accused, however, escaped and a search was on to nab them. - Staff Reporter

SVU professor invited to Germany

TIRUPATI: G. Ramakrishna Naidu, a professor of Environmental Sciences in Sri Venkateswara University, will be visiting University of Mainz, Germany, on invitation from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on September 15.

He will also visit Strassberg, France, and RWTH, Aachen, for pursuing advanced research, according to a release. - Staff Reporter

Hindi tests scrapped

HYDERABAD: The Hindi Prachar Sabha has scrapped the Vidhwan and Bhooshan examinations conducted at Haridasapuram centre, in Srikakulam district, on September 10, following reports of mass copying. Fishermen drowned?

Srikakulam: Three fishermen of Idupuram village in Itchapuram mandal are feared drowned at sea when the boat in which they went fishing capsized on Wednesday. The fishermen had gone fishing despite heavy rain in the district. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, on Wednesday suspended from the party Duvvuru Aruna for contesting against the official candidate in the 47th division of Nellore Municipal Corporation, according to a press release issued by the party general secretary, K. Action demanded

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Official Language Commission has demanded action against the Visakhapatnam Collector for defying the Government on teaching of English for students of classes I and II in 73 primary and seven upper primary municipal schools. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Government is planning to set up offices overseas to prevent people from being cheated by fraudulent immigration consultants, Labour Minister, G. Vinod, said on Tuesday. Maoists kill ex-naxal

KARIMNAGAR: Maoists killed a surrendered naxalite branding him a police informer on Ambatpalli village outskirts of Mahadevpur mandal on Wednesday. Statue desecrated

ANANTAPUR: A statue of Potti Sreeramulu was desecrated in Kadiri on Wednesday. Unidentified persons had uprooted it from the pedestal and pushed it onto the road at the Tower Clock centre. A silent procession was led by Arya Vysya Sangham in protest against the incident. - Staff Reporter

Deadline for Inter fee

HYDERABAD: The Board of Intermediate Education has announced September 30 as the last date for payment of fee without fine for the Intermediate public examinations to be held in March 2006. Students can pay before October 7 with a penal fee of Rs. 100. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The police unearthed three powerful claymore mines planted near a hillock on Kanaganapalli-Tagarakunta road on Wednesday. It is suspected the mines were aimed at police. - Staff Reporter
