Easy opener for Rafael Nadal

BEIJING: : Top-seeded Rafael Nadal sailed into the second round of the China Open on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo.

Nadal, the French Open champion, waited two days to take to the court at the Beijing Tennis Center because his opponent Wang was delayed by business in Turkey, organisers had said without elaborating.

The Spaniard appeared eager to make up for lost time, sprinting to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set and wrapping up the match in less than 90 minutes.

Campaign over

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza crashed out of the doubles event too following her singles round loss in WTA Wismilak International in Bali. Sania and her Polish partner, Marta Domachowska, tried their best but could not stop the Chinese duo of Tiantian Sun and Ting Li from winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to move in to the second round.

Pitted against the third seeds, it was never going to be easy for the Indo-Polish duo but it did not give up easily. The first set saw both the pairs trying to outdo each other even though the Chinese held their nerve to win the first set and go one up.

After conceding the first set, the Sania-Marta pair showed some sense of urgency and raised their game to clinch the second set to stretch it to the decider. Jolted by the second set reverse, the Chinese duo took the rein in its hand and never relaxed till it pocketed the set and the match.
