SHOW OF VOCAL POWER: Vijaykanth speaking at the political conference in Madurai on Wednesday. PHOTO:S.JAMES.
MADURAI: It was perhaps the largest gathering of people in recent times in this part of the State. The first political conference of actor Vijaykanth drew big crowds from many districts. Though the turnout was a little over a lakh in the morning, the number doubled when `Captain,' as his fans call him, rose to make his maiden political speech at 6.30 p.m. All through the two-hour address, he explained the purpose of launching the party and its objectives. Though a major chunk of the audience remained composed and listened to the points made by the matinee idol, some "enthusiastic" fans surged forward to watch their "hero" closely giving some tense moments to the police. A large gathering that could not make it to the `pandal' saw the proceedings on stage live on a giant television screen. Mr. Vijaykanth recalled his 25-year-old association with fan clubs. Identifying himself with the masses, he referred to the contributions made to relief funds and welfare programmes. Emphasising the need to enhance procurement price of agricultural produce, he asked party workers to prefer tender coconut or buttermilk instead of soft drinks. "By doing so, you will be supporting our farmers," he said. Whenever he referred to his roles in movies, particularly "Ramana", there was a spontaneous applause from the crowd. Thoppur, venue of the event, wore a festive look.
