Alleged extortionist held

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Mohar Singh, an alleged extortionist whose name spelt terror among businessmen in the Walled City of Delhi, was arrested in Connaught Place by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police on Tuesday evening. A Toyota Qualis and a pistol have been recovered from his possession.

Acting on a tip-off that Mohar, a registered bad character of Darya Ganj police station, would come to Connaught Place, a team led by ACP Kumar Gyanesh laid a trap and arrested him near Hanuman Mandir.

During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in several cases of crime.

According to the police, Mohar was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) way back in 2000. He was first arrested on charges of trying to grab the property of a doctor at Faiz Bazaar at other's behest. Mohar became a terror in the Kotwali area after he and his accomplices attacked three businessmen brothers, killing one of them, Pawan Gulati. Afraid of being targeted by him, the witnesses of the incident did not depose against him in the court.

Mohar allegedly motivated his brothers, Jeet, Khoob and Sher Singh, to eliminate one of the witnesses named Onkar. The police said Mohar and his brothers extorted money from Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Vasant Kunj. At his instance, a contract killer, Pankaj, allegedly gunned down Satish Kohli, a witness in a case against him. The wife and one of the relations of the deceased were so terrified by the incident that they later retracted from their statements while deposing during the trail.
