Airlines celebrate Onam

The who's who of the airline and hospitality industry participated in the Onam celebrations organised by the Gulf-based airlines in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. The head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore, Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma, was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Varma criticised the tendency to distort the image of the benevolent ruler Mahabali in the minds of the people by portraying him in a crude manner through cartoons and photographs. The hosts handed over a big gift packet to Mr. Varma, but he made it a point to open the packet before accepting it. To the surprise and amusement of the chief guest and the rest of those assembled, the gift was nothing but a miniature version of an aircraft.
