MADURAI: She has done it again, this time at the German Open Athletic Championships for the Disabled at Berlin, where she claimed two bronze medals in shotput and discus events. Braving the biting cold and inclement weather, J. Deepa, a physically challenged sportswoman, performed creditably and brought laurels to the country amidst stiff competition. In only her second international appearance, Deepa was able to attract attention with an impressive throw in the shotput event hurling the iron ball 6.85 metres. Germany claimed the gold followed by France with the silver. In the discus throw event, she cleared a distance of 18.95 metres, whereas Netherlands won the gold clearing the 24-metre mark and Germany bagged the silver. Though she feels happy over her achievement, she is disappointed about her performance in the javelin event. In her maiden appearance in 2004 at the Belgium Open she bagged the silver medal in the javelin throw, apart from two bronze medals in the shotput and discus events. But, in Berlin, she could make it to only the fifth place. Every year she participates in national and international evens with the help of local sponsors.
