Woman killed

HASSAN: An unidentified woman aged about 50 was killed when a LPG tanker knocked her down near Kenchatahalli on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday night, according to the police.

Trains cancelled

HUBLI: South Western Railway has cancelled the Bellary-Guntakal Passenger (Train No. 253) and Guntakal-Bellary Passenger (Train No. 254) on Friday owing to track-doubling work being carried out between Hagari and Bellary sections, said a press release. — Staff Correspondent

Liberation Day

BIDAR: Minister for Forests and district in charge Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli will hoist the National Flag to mark Hyderabad-Karnataka Liberation Day in Bidar on Saturday.

Devendra Kamal will deliver a special lecture on the occasion. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Wakf Mirajuddin Patel; Narsingrao Suryavanshi, MP; and Bidar City Municipal Council President Chandrashekar Patil will participate in the function. Couple commit suicide

BIJAPUR: Dejected upon discovering that they were HIV positive, a couple committed suicide at Murankeri colony here on Thursday.

The police gave their names as Rajkumar Shetgar, 29, and his wife, Eeramma, 25. They are survived by a three-year-old son.

It is said that Eeramma was pregnant.

In a suicide note accompanied with medical reports confirming that they were HIV positive, the couple said nobody is responsible for their death. — Staff Correspondent

Engineers' Day

BIDAR: Engineers' Day was celebrated here on Thursday to mark Sir M. Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary.

Engineers, students and employees of private and public enterprises took out a rally from Ambedkar Circle to Guru Nanak Jhira Hall, the venue of the function.

Janata Dal (S) leaders resign

SIRSI: Many leaders of Yellapur taluk Janata Dal (Secular) resigned from the party in support of the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Ministers Satish Jarkiholi and H.C. Mahadevappa, according to a press release here on Thursday.

ATM inaugurated

HUBLI: K.S. Patil, Principal, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), inaugurated the automated teller machine (ATM) facility of the Syndicate on the KIMS premises here on Thursday. M.G. Hiremath, Medical Superintendent, KIMS was the chief guest.

Student killed

SIRSI: Sanjay Krishna Naik, a student of Balehadda Primary School on Sirsi-Yellapur road was killed when a branch of a tree fell on him near the school on Wednesday.

Minister confident of good harvest

BANGALORE: Agriculture Minister K. Srinivasa Gowda has said that a good monsoon in the last couple of months meant that there will be a good harvest. Though floods caused huge loss of standing crops in three districts, the Government is confident that the target of 81 lakh tonnes of foodgrain production will be reached.

Alva's Nudisiri from October 21

MOODBIDRI: Alva's Education Foundation here is organising `Alva's Nudisiri 2005,' a three-day national level conference on Kannada, its land and language here from October 21. A press release from M. Check sea erosion: MP

Udupi: Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, has urged the Union Government to take permanent steps to prevent sea erosion and river erosion in the coastal districts.

In a press release here, Ms. Madhwaraj said that all the west-flowing rivers in the coastal districts joined the sea. This created huge sea waves especially during the rainy season. These waves destroyed houses, roads and coconut palms on the beaches. Only temporary measures were being taken to deal with the problem of sea erosion. — Staff Correspondent

Charter on e-waste recycling soon

BANGALORE: A nodal agency comprising representatives from the National Association of Software and Service Companies and the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology and the Central and State Pollution Control Boards was launched on Tuesday to develop a charter to regulate the recycling of electronic waste in Bangalore. The former Chief Secretary A. Ravindra has been elected chairman of the agency. Bangalore generates more than 8,000 tonnes of e-waste every year. — Staff Reporter

Plan for water supply by one agency

BIJAPUR: The State Government is considering a proposal to bring rural and urban water supply under a single agency, according to Minister of State for Rural Water Supply B. Sathyanarayana. The Minister, who was on his way to Hukkeri taluk where 11 persons died after drinking contaminated water, told presspersons here on Thursday that he has proposed the formation of a Karnataka Drinking Water Board by merging the Department of Rural Water Supply and the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board. A meeting has been called on September 19 to consider the proposal.

MLA arrested for

locking PWD office

Belgaum: Abhaykumar Patil, BJP MLA for Bagewadi, and about 100 others were arrested and later released for locking the office of the Executive Engineer, Public Works Department on the fort premises here on Thursday.

Mr. Patil, who has been pleading with the PWD authorities to repair roads and complete work on the roads that began four months ago, said he lost his patience when his request fell on deaf ears. Left with no option but to protest, he led a group of supporters to the PWD office and locked the main door.

Safety certification

for HPCL terminal

MANGALORE: The Mangalore terminal of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) has received the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001:1999) certification effective from September 5. Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives S.C. Maity displayed the certificate in the presence of Arup Shai, Senior Installation Manager, HPCL, here on Wednesday.

A press release from Mr. Shai said HPCL's Mangalore terminal is first petroleum marketing installation in India that has been awarded this certification. — Staff Correspondent

BEL gets Indira Gandhi Raj Bhasha Award

BANGALORE: Bharat Electronics Ltd., a major Defence public sector undertaking, has bagged the Indira Gandhi Raj Bhasha Award for 2003-04. BEL Chairman and Managing Director Y. Gopala Rao received the award from Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil at a function in New Delhi on Wednesday. BEL has been adjudged the second best among Union Government establishments with their headquarters in the `C' region for outstanding contribution in implementing the official language.

`Make Deve Gowda Prime Minister'

Bangalore: A former All-India Congress Committee member from the State, T.D.R. Harishchandra Gowda, has suggested to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to extend her party's support to make H.D. Deve Gowda the Prime Minister.

In a letter to Ms. Gandhi, he said Mr. Gowda has the support of the Left parties, which are the main props of the United Progressive Alliance Government. The Janata Dal (S) has joined hands with the Congress in Karnataka to form a coalition government and it will be apt if the latter reciprocates the gesture by helping Mr. Gowda become the Prime Minister. — Special Correspondent
