CHENNAI: The South India Hotels and Restaurants Association (SIH &RA) feels that the hospitality industry is showing signs of recovery after the tsunami disaster. Its president, M.P. Purushothaman, said out of the 75 hotel projects in the three and five star category approved in the country, 45 were in southern India. Addressing a press conference after chairing the 54th annual general meeting of SIH&RA, Mr. Purushothaman said out of the 45 star hotels, four each would come up in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, a lion's share of 26 in Kerala, six in Tamil Nadu and two in Pondicherry. Apart from the six in Tamil Nadu, five new business class hotels had been cleared for construction along the Information Technology corridor here to meet the demands of software professionals and business visitors. Mr. Purushothaman, who was re-elected for a one-year term, said occupancy levels in hotels in Chennai ranged between 76 and 80 per cent as there was a boom in the information technology sector, financial services and automobile industry and also due to the growing number of airline operators.
Convention
Chennai will play host to the 41st annual Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India convention. The meet will be held at the Chennai Convention Centre with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, inaugurating it.
