KOZHIKODE: The official Onam celebrations lent colour and verve to Thiruvonam observance in the city on Thursday. Ghazals, and rendering of film songs, recitation of poems, music concerts and dance recitals provided entertainment at the Onam Week celebrations being organised by the Kerala State Tourism Department and the District Tourism Promotion Council, on the third day. A wide variety of programmes were showcased at the different venues. At the main venue at the Tagore Hall, the ganamela held on the occasion, was led by Amit Kumar son of late singer, Kishore Kumar. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran presented mementos to the singers who participated. T. P. M. Saheer, MLA, presided. The District Collector Rachna Shah among others were present on the occasion. The programme was followed by a ghazal nite by Bhupendra Singh and Mithali Singh. A session of Onam poetry recitation was conducted at the S. K. Pottekkat Centre. Poet Alancode Leelakrishnan inaugurated the programme titled `Onam kavithakalude sangeetavishkaram'. A number of poets participated in the programme of reciting Onam poetry. At the Town Hall the drama `Randam janmam' (Deshaposhini Kalasamithi) and `Mazhaveedu' (Nadakabandhu, Vadakara) were staged as part of the Onam Week celebrations. Theyyam, Onam songs, chimmanakkali, thiruvathirakali, and folk songs were staged at the Model Higher Secondary School. A music concert was organised at the Jaya Auditorium and dance recitals at the Jubilee Hall, Kandamkulam. The football finals was held at the stadium.
Food festival
A food festival is being organised as part of the Onam Week celebrations at Swapna Nagari from September 10 to 17. As many as 15 stalls put up by prominent hotels and caterers provide the opportunity to the public to taste different types of cuisine.
