NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Thursday asked the residents of Delhi to boycott the "drama'' of the drive to test electricity meters by the Delhi Government and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission. He exhorted them to start a movement to reclaim crores of rupees that the power distribution companies had charged them by installing fast-running meters. In a statement issued here, Dr. Vardhan urged the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, to depute internationally reputed companies to check the meters and said all 10 lakh meters should be checked to get to the truth.
Refund excess money
The extra money allegedly charged from consumers through the fast running meters should also be refunded, he added. "And until this happens, the consumers should not pay their power bills," he declared. The BJP leader claimed that the tests were now being done in haste and since they would be conducted under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Magistrates, it exposes the intention of the Government. The SDMs were neither technical experts nor could they conclude if the meters were running fast or not. Stating that earlier too the Delhi Government had on five occasions conducted tests on 730 fast running meters. At least twice the meters were found to be running fast while on three occasions the data was different, he said. The test reports have not been made public till date. Dr. Vardhan demanded that mechanical meters be installed parallel to all fast running meters to ascertain the facts.
