LPG dealers asked to verify ration cards for booking refills

Officials say many concealed gas connection details to get kerosene

  • Authorities act after kerosene demand goes up at fair price shops
  • They hope it will curb use of domestic cylinders in commercial units, automobiles

KANCHEEPURAM: The mad rush to get kerosene and LPG for domestic use, particularly in Uthiramerur taluk, has led to cross-verification of ration cards by LPG dealers in Kancheepuram district.

Enquiries revealed that several family cardholders in the taluk had suppressed details regarding LPG connections, while applying for renewal of ration cards, presumably to avail themselves of kerosene supply.

A total of 31,166 applications for renewal were received in the taluk and around 31,000 cards have been distributed so far.

Subsequently, when the Taluk Supply Office received indents seeking increase in the quantity of kerosene from fair price shops, Civil Supplies officials verified the old cards, which led to the finding that many cardholders had suppressed LPG connection details.

The officials issued circulars to LPG distributors in the district to verify ration cards before booking refills. The cardholders may have suppressed LPG connection details to avail themselves of five litres of kerosene supplied on family cards in erstwhile town panchayat areas.

While 10 litres of kerosene was provided to a cardholder in the district headquarters, six litres in municipal areas, five litres in special village panchayats (erstwhile town panchayats) and three litres was given to those residing in village panchayats, officials said. Dealers, who were facing difficulty in ensuring timely supply of refills in view of the steep reduction in allotment of cylinders from oil companies, turned away those who had been using connection taken in the name of a person who is not a member of the family. Such customers were asked to apply for name transfer to retain their LPG supply. Cross-verification will help weed out multiple LPG connections in the name of an individual/ a family, according to the LPG distributors.
