MADURAI: In an emotional outburst, a 55-year-old woman from Chennai bemoaned, cried aloud and went to the extent of rolling down the corridors of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, on Thursday, with her husband and others facing a tough time handling the situation. The woman was grief-stricken following the order of the Bench, which handed over the interim custody of her four-year-old grandson to his parents for a month. The maternal grandparents had brought up the child for the past three years after his mother deserted him in August 2002. Passing interim orders on a habeas corpus petition moved by the mother, a Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice S. Sardar Zackria Hussain said, though the minor child was brought up by the grandparents, the right of the petitioner, who is the mother and natural guardian could not be denied. "Though we expected that the 2nd Respondent (Grandfather) himself to hand over the child, he is not amenable to our suggestions," the Bench said. Hence as an interim measure the grandparents were directed to handover the child to the mother and posted the matter on October 19. The Additional Public Prosecutor was also directed to provide adequate protection to the parents and child till they reach their residence. According to the mother, she married a youth from Ramanathapuram on July 11, 1999. But since her husband sold all her jewels to settle his debts, her father developed animosity against him and took her back to the maternal home, where she gave birth to her first son on March 7, 2001. Thereafter, in August 2002, she rejoined with her husband against the wish of her father and from then the child continued to be in the custody of her parents.
