CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), which had been spearheading the ideals of late Anna, would continue to protect and stand by his principles, said the party general secretary, Mr. Vaiko here on Thursday. Addressing a public meeting, organised by the party in connection with the birth anniversary of Periyar EVR and Anna at Peravallur Square near here, Mr.Vaiko said the party had withstood many odds and sufferings since its inception 12 years. If the cadres continued to remain loyal to the party it was due to their firm commitment to the party's ideals. They were not for power or pelf but for a noble cause for protecting and preserving the ideals of late Anna. Mr.Vaiko claimed that it was due to the party's sustained effort, the Sethusamudram project, a 150-year old dream of Tamils, had become a reality. Similarly the party was for the continuation of the two-language formula enunciated by late Anna for preventing "Hindi hegemony." Similarly to defend the freedom of speech and expression, which Anna stood for throughout his life, he and some of his colleagues had to undergo imprisonment for about 18 months. In the morning, Mr. Vaiko unveiled a bust of late C.N. Annadurai at the party headquarters in Egmore.
