TIRUPUR: After a gap of four years, the Tirupur Municipality on Thursday began providing new water connections. Those who received the connections include three residents waiting since 1993. As a mark of inauguration, Municipal Chairman M.N. Palanisamy formally turned on the water taps at houses in Devangapuram and on College Road. With more than 10,000 applicants awaiting new connections, officials said that the work to provide new water connections would continue. The urban body had obtained permission from the Commissioner of Municipal Administration to provide 2,000 connections a year ago. To reporters, Mr. Palanisamy said the Municipality would obtain permission to give connections to the remaining 8,000 applicants once they completed providing the sanctioned connections. The town will soon get the full quantum of 15 million litres a day under the Tirupur Water Supply Scheme, being executed by the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited. And it is now gets 26.5 mld under two schemes by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply Drainage Board. Residents of Tirupur, reeling under acute water scarcity, get water once in six days.
