KOCHI: About 5,000 people participated in the Onasadya a solemn lunch, laid out at the Thrikkakara temple, as the temple, considered the seat of the Onam celebrations led the State in welcoming the legendary king Mahabali on his annual visit to the State. The community feast, attended by people from all walks of life cutting across religious divides, was the culmination of a 10-day-long celebrations that the Thrikkakara temple is famous for during the Onam season. This year's feast was doubly sumptuous for the temple authorities because the lunch was laid out in the new reception hall inaugurated last Sunday. The number of people participating in the free lunch, a practice about a quarter century old now, has grown significantly. The feast and the Thiruonam day celebrations runs up a bill of about Rs. 10 lakh, met solely through sponsorships and contributions from people. The lunch was served from 10.30 a. m. and orderly queues were still on at around 3 p. m. After more than a week of frenzied shopping and traffic jams, the city looked serene as the rain gods relented. Hotels and catering institutions across the city organised Onasadyas with varying price tags. An Onam feast for the poorest of the poor was one of the highlights of the Onam celebrations in the city. The lunch was organised for people on the streets by the Sauhrida Vedi at the High Court Junction from 10 a. m.
