Government told to approve rules for panchayat polls

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Upset over the delay in holding elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats, the Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the State Government to approve the rules framed by a subcommittee and directed the Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, to be present in court on September 21.

Justice Rammohan Reddy passed the order on petitions seeking elections to the panchayats. The petitioners said the Government had delayed holding the elections and appointed administrators.

When the matter came up, the Government advocate submitted that a Cabinet subcommittee had already finalised the draft rules on the elections and they have to be placed before the Cabinet.

Justice Reddy wanted to know why the matter had not been placed before the Cabinet. He said he had no option but to direct the State to approve the rules and place it before the court on September 21.

The judge adjourned further hearing on the petition.
