Applicants asked to approach CJI

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday declined to pass any order on an application by two Councillors of the Goa Municipal Corporation seeking permission to use loudspeakers after 10 p.m. during the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony procession on Saturday.

A Bench of Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice S. B. Sinha, refused to pass any order on the plea by Ujjual Keskar of the BJP and Rashid Sheikh of the Congress.

Since the Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti wrote the main judgment, the Bench asked the applicants to approach the CJI for the relaxation.

On September 12, the apex court dismissed an application filed by the Maharashtra Government seeking relaxation of the ban to allow the use of loudspeakers for three days during the 11-day Ganesh festival.

The court had banned the use of loudspeakers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. while making it clear that no relaxation could be granted in the name of religion.
